China criticizes pope over comment on Uighur Muslim minority

China criticized Pope Francis on Tuesday over a passage in his new e book through which he mentions struggling by China’s Uighur Muslim minority group.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian mentioned Francis’ remarks had “no factual basis at all.”

“People of all ethnic groups enjoy the full rights of survival, development, and freedom of religious belief,” Zhao mentioned at a day by day briefing.

Zhao made no point out of the camps through which greater than 1 million Uighurs and members of different Chinese Muslim minority teams have been held. The U.S. and different governments, together with human rights teams, say the prison-like amenities are supposed to divide Muslims from their non secular and cultural heritage, forcing them to declare loyalty to China’s ruling Communist Party and its chief, Xi Jinping.

China, which initially denied the existence of the amenities, now says they’re facilities supposed to offer job coaching and stop terrorism and spiritual extremism on a voluntary foundation.

In his new e book “Let Us Dream,” due Dec. 1, Francis listed the “poor Uighurs” amongst examples of teams persecuted for his or her religion.

Francis wrote about the necessity to see the world from the peripheries and the margins of society, “to places of sin and misery, of exclusion and suffering, of illness and solitude.”

In such locations of struggling, “I think often of persecuted peoples: the Rohingya, the poor Uighurs, the Yazidi — what ISIS did to them was truly cruel — or Christians in Egypt and Pakistan killed by bombs that went off while they prayed in church,” Francis wrote.

Francis has declined to name out China for its crackdown on non secular minorities, together with Catholics, a lot to the dismay of the Trump administration and human rights teams. The Vatican final month renewed its controversial settlement with Beijing on nominating Catholic bishops, and Francis has been cautious to not say or do something to offend the Chinese authorities on the topic.

China and the Vatican have had no formal relations because the Communist Party minimize ties and arrested Catholic clerics quickly after seizing energy in 1949.
